Clitheroe Castle also known as the Witches Castle, is known to be one of the most haunted castles in Lancashire. The castle built before 1186, is one of the smallest keeps in the country with a curtain wall. This was an extra wall around the outside of the castle for added protection..

There is a hole is the side of the castle witch is said from legend that the Devil threw a boulder from Pendle Hill, after having enough of residents of Clitheroe.

Clitheroe Castle Museum underwent a 3.5 million pound refurbishment and is open to the public.

Paranormal Activity:

A ghost only named as the White Lady, no one has any idea who she is. Teams are still trying to investigate this mystery.

Drakelow Tunnels

Drakelow Tunnels was built during World War 2. Over 3.5 miles of tunnels dug into the sandstone hills of Kidderminster. Constructed for Rover as a shadow factory, they made engines for the Bristol Aeroplane Company. It was also to supply other Rover factory’s with spare parts and also acting as a backup facility.

Six deaths have been rumoured to have occurred, due to human fault and roof collapsing. It has be rumoured that the initials of each person was carved into the sandstone where they died.

Important Information:

Due to the vast size of the tunnels, it is essential that you bring suitable shoes.  If you are afraid of the dark, then this isn’t the event for you. The tunnels have no electricity and the only light source will be from touches. If you have your own touch, then by all means bring it along as we may not be able to provide them.

Vigil Times:

Named after previous Landlord Thomas Busby who owned the Inn in the 18th century.

Thomas Busby was executed for the murder or his father-in-law. His remains were hung outside the Inn on a gibbet (gallows). Stoop is taken from the post from which his remains could be seen.

Ghost Story: Thomas Busby was a thief and a drunkard. One night Thomas had quite a few to drink and killed his father-in-law in a drunken rage with a hammer. For this they executed Busby and left his remains on the gibbet just outside the Inn.

On the day of his execution, Thomas was sat in his favorite chair in the Inn. As he was dragged from his chair to the gallows Thomas declared that anyone who sat in his chair would die a sudden and violent death. For the next 200 years people did in fact sit in his chair and die within a few weeks of doing so. For some it was within a few hours.

Busby is believed to visit the Inn today, standing outside where the gibbet was, his head rolling to one side.

The chair can now be found in Thirsk Museum. It is placed up high to avoid the risk of being sat in.
